Prayer of the heart

The Holy Spirit just reminded me of this discipline, because I needed it sorely! First learned it while reading a writing of Madame Guyon and it just clicked.

Prayer is the application of the heart to God, and the internal exercise of love. S. Paul hath enjoined us to ‘pray without ceasing’1, and our Lord saith, ‘I say unto you all, watch and pray’2: all therefore may, and all ought to practice prayer.”

To some this seems impossible, but to those who have found the secret to prayer, it is very easy. Prayer does not always have to be made of words, “for we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God“3. So simply fill up your heart with love towards God. This is the prayer of the heart.
